It appears that DC is looking to further expand its TV universe beyond Arrow and The Flash, with the introduction of a Supergirl TV series, set to appear next year on CBS. There is no definite word on whether the three show will be set in the same universe, however the rumor mills are buzzing that this is a distinct possibility, given that the CW (home of Arrow and The Flash) is jointly owned by Warner Bros. (Parent company of DC Comics) and CBS.
SupergirlI personally find this development intriguing, although I must admit that I have some skepticism as to whether DC will rush to tie the three shows together, at least initially. Even though series producer, Greg Berlanti teased the possibility for a rare inter-network crossover to occur, as all three shows would be produced by Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

I think in this situation, it’s important for the Supergirl show to establish itself first, before any crossover occurs. I would hate for it to be a flop and in anyway tarnish the excellent work being done on Arrow and The Flash. Also, any introduction of NEW characters into a connected TV universe, requires careful planning and strong character development, in my opinion.

Claire HoltI will say that I’m somewhat impressed that the frontrunner for the role of Supergirl is Claire Holt, Vampire Diaries and Originals alum. I think she would do the role justice and she fits the character’s mold.

The show is supposed to center on Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, who at the age of 12, escaped the destruction of Krypton and ended up on Earth. Once there, she is taken in by the Danvers family and given the name, Linda Danvers. Throughout her life on Earth, Linda has hidden her Kryptonian abilities and at the age of 24, an incident forces her to embrace her superhuman abilities and evolve into the hero she was destined to become.

According to casting rumors, the series will include NEW versions of established DC characters including: Jimmy Olsen and Cat Grant, as well as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, head of the Department for Extranormal Operations and Kara’s elder, foster sister. Yeah, the whole Alex Danvers/Lex Luthor nod doesn’t escape me either. Also, included is a young version of Winslow Schott aka Toyman.
