Plot Synopsis

Barry starts to become reliant on his powers to the point of cockiness, much to Dr. Wells’ chagrin. As The Flash, he faces off against Farooq Gibran aka Blackout, a metahuman who can harness electricity and must regularly consume it in order to survive. When a charred body is linked to Blackout, The Flash tracks him down and confronts him. Blackout unleashes his power on The Flash, siphons all his electricity and leaves him powerless. Team Flash races to reverse the effects as Blackout arrives at S.T.A.R. Labs seeking vengeance against Wells, who he blames for the accident which created him. Meanwhile, Arrow villain, Tockman aka Clock King, takes hostages at the Central City Police Headquarters, among them Joe and Iris. Without Barry’s powers to protect them, Team Flash must come up with a plan to deal with Blackout.

Top 5 Moments

  • Barry loses his powers and when he gets them back, we may have discovered The Speed Force! I wanted to see just how reliant he had become on them and what his reaction to losing them would be. This also revealed how just how desperate Wells is to
  • Wells clashes with Barry! I knew this would happen and I predict that it will continue from time to time until the true motives behind Wells are revealed. We’ve seen thus far that he is willing to kill and allow others to die, in order to maintain the timeline of the Flash’s existence.
  • The Clock King Cometh! I loved the fact that The Clock King, a character introduced on Arrow, shows up in Central City and spreads his own brand of chaos. I also liked that the writers took this as an opportunity to allow Iris to show some moxie! I HATE damsels in distress…as a writer, I almost always create strong, female protagonists and antagonists, because of this. I still don’t like the idea that Iris is being kept in the dark (no pun intended) about Barry being The Flash. However, I can only hope that the truth is revealed to her by the end of the season.
  • Easter Eggs Galore! I go into more detail on exactly what those Easter Eggs are below, but I was actually grinning when they were revealed. These are AWESOME revelations and one I hope they play out over the course of the show’s run, which I have no doubt will run at least another season.
  • Wells wants Barry’s powers! We all knew, or at least suspected that Dr. Wells was extremely preoccupied with Barry, his abilities and his future. When at the end of the episode, he extracted blood from Farooq’s corpse, he made the statement that he wanted to know how he stole Barry’s powers. What’s ironic is that in the comics, Farooq existed on the version of Earth created by the events of Flashpoint, a mini-series which explores a world/timeline where The Flash never existed. This was put into play as a means for Professor Zoom aka The Reverse Flash, to negate the existence of the Flash without altering his own legacy. As it is widely suspected that Wells may be Zoom, this would play into the current underlying storyline rather nicely.

Easter Eggs

I was really GEEKED when the Easter Eggs for this episode were revealed. When Wells was talking to Farooq about the people killed in the accelerator explosion, he mentioned names which happened to be the secret identities of various DC Comics characters!

  • Ralph Dibny aka Elongated Man
  • Al Rothstein aka Nuklon/Atom Smasher
  • Grant Emerson aka Damage
  • Will Everett aka Amazing Man
  • Bea Da Costa aka Fire
  • Ronnie Raymond aka Firestorm (not really an Easter Egg since we knew he was believed to be killed and is making his return as Firestorm!)

I would LOVE to see these characters resurface over the course of the series! Talk about forming a DC TV Universe Justice League…including these characters and the others they have hinted at (Captain Atom aka Cameron Scott, Blue Beetle aka Ted Kord) would be OFF DA CHAIN!!!

I can only hope that in my Geek’s Heart, that these characters are found alive and developed, because that would be an awesome undertaking and the special effects would be magnificent!

Bonus Easter Eggs! In the beginning of the episode, when Barry was being mugged in the alley, there were two posters on the wall behind him. One, was for a movie called Nighthawk & Cinnamon, who were Western characters from DC Comics and the second was for a movie called Blue Devil, another DC Comics character.

Predictions

I see more of the Flash’s Rogues Gallery to be introduced and eventually that will include Grood and hopefully, Mirror Master. Once the Rogues realize they can’t take on the Flash by themselves, they will team up and set traps for him. It will be interesting to see how Barry deals with multiple foes and whether other metahuman heroes will show up to lend a hand, (see list in Easter Eggs!).

Final Thoughts

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I do hate it when villains die. I would have wanted to see Barry come up against Farooq aka Blackout again, although at least he wasn’t a major baddie like Cold, Heatwave or Boomerang.

I give this episode a B+ rating.
