Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Season 2, Episode 12, “Who You Really Are”; Airdate: 03/10/15)
Plot Synopsis
Coulson and his team are called to the aid of an amnesiac Lady Sif, who lost her memory after a battle with a mysterious warrior on an equally mysterious mission, which when revealed will have a ripple effect throughout S.H.I.E.L.D. Meanwhile, Bobbi and Mack continue to conceal their true mission from the team and Skye is forced to come clean about her newly acquired abilities.
Top Five Moments
- Lady Sif Returns! I won’t lie, I was pretty stoked that Jaimie Alexander was set to return to the show. The story adds credence that the Asgardians knowledge of the Kree and other extraterrestrial beings will come in handy for the humans. It has been speculated that Thor will use this knowledge to aid the Avengers in AoU. I like that we get to see the Lady Sif character, as she seems to be all but neglected in the Thor films, in favor of Jane Foster, whom I’m not particularly fond of.
- A Kree Warrior on Earth! I was delighted to see Eddie McClintock (Warehouse 13) in the role of the Kree Warrior named Vin-Tak. Having a Kree be involved directly with this show is a sign to me that the studio is taking the aspect of tying AoS to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe very seriously. It also opens up the MCU to tell great stories involving the Kree and build up to the Captain Marvel film.
- Bobbi and Mack aren’t Hydra! I had been wondering about this ever since it was revealed that the two of them had a hidden agenda. I honestly didn’t want that to be the case, however the question remains as to what their agenda is exactly and who do they work for. I’ll air my thoughts on this in the predictions segment.
- More diviners! It was practically a given that more diviners existed than the one used to transform Skye and Raina. Given the fact that Gordon aka Reader (speculated), was introduced along with the unknown facility where he was exposed to the Terrigen Mists in, it stood to reason that there were more of them out there.
- Skye comes clean! Obviously it was only a matter of time until Skye would have been forced to reveal her abilities to the team. I’m very glad that they didn’t drag this out forever. Not only would it have been preposterous for the team not to notice, but the momentum of the show would have been greatly compromised. As it stands, the pacing for this season, especially the second half of the season is fast paced, engaging and interesting. KEEP IT UP!!!
Easter Eggs
- When Hunter tells Bobbi that she can turn into a bit of a nightmare, he was likely referencing that at some point in the comics, she becomes mentally unstable, brainwashed and worked as a villain.
- When Lady Sif says that there are only 7 known species across the nine realms which require nitrogen to breathe, she was referring to: the Badoon, the Dire Wraiths, the Brood, Shi’ar, the Phalanx and the Skrulls. While Marvel doesn’t have the movie licensing for all of these alien races, it was a fun nod to their existence from the comics.
Predictions
I think that this episode has opened a lot of doors within the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe and will allow for BIG, fan favorite stories to be told in the future. Again the Asgardians and Kree are well aware of one another and this could possibly lead to the introduction of other alien races and the formation of S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation Response Department), a subdivision of S.H.I.E.L.D. which in the comics was headed by Abigail Brand. And, although she is a mutant in the comics, it could easily be changed to where she’s an Inhuman for the MCU. It also helps that the character of Abigail Brand was co-created by AoS producer, Joss Whedon.
The confirmation of the Kree involvement in the origins of the Inhumans, opens the MCU up to a plethora of GREAT stories from the comics.
For instance, the Kree/Skrull War.
I know that the rights to the Skrulls is with the Fantastic Four over at Fox. However, hopefully the NEW movie is a flop and Fox decides to enter into a deal with Marvel similar to Sony’s regarding Spider-Man. In the event that doesn’t happen, the Skrulls could be substituted for the Chitauri easily enough. This could play out in AoS as a Secret Invasion story arc and involve cameos from the actors in the films. It could also ease into crossovers with the Netflix shows: AKA Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the Defenders.
Given the fact that Skye is actually Daisy Johnson aka Quake from the comics, the MCU is now opened to pursue the Secret Warriors storyline from the comics. This could be the follow-up/aftermath of a Secret Invasion storyline. Here, they could introduce a team of NEW Inhumans who live on Earth and function as a team of super-powered, government agents under Nick Fury’s command. Skye aka Daisy could lead them (like in the comics), which could possibly lead to a spin-off show in and of itself.
As for the people Bobbi and Mack are working for, I believe they are either going to turn out to be S.W.O.R.D., the precursor to S.W.O.R.D. or W.C.A. (World Counterterrorism Agency) which in the comics, Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird is the head of. This opens up a whole other level of storytelling and could possibly open us up to the possibility of a S.H.I.E.L.D. film sometime in the future. Think: Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Phil Coulson & Team, S.W.O.R.D., Hydra, Agent 13 aka Sharon Carter, Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Hawkeye, W.C.A., etc…
Final Thoughts
I really enjoyed this episode and feel that the show has definitely taken a turn for the better, compared to last season. AoS is moving in a solid direction, in my opinion and if this level of intense story telling continues, I can only see bigger and better for the future.
I give this episode a solid B+.
